One thing I have been missing lately is some holiday food from the states. Call me American, but to me, a nice hearty meal is a turkey, some stuffing, potatoes, gravy and a nice dessert, not a piece of fish grilled with soy sauce and some rice and veggies(which, of course, is also delicious).
Today a friend of mine held a Thanksgiving workshop in which he taught how to cook a gobbler for Thanksgiving. It was kind of expensive (5,000 yen for one person) but since I haven't had Thanksgiving dinner for nearly 3 years, I happily paid it. It was fun cooking a traditional meal and even more fun doing it with a few 60+ year old Japanese Obaachans. I was amazed at their knife skills as they would probably rival some of the top chefs in the world. (/Start Script: British Accent) I like me knives, and I know me way with the knife, but those ladies were rather good. (/End Script: British Accent) We had a good time talking and one of the older ladies even had the experience of traveling to Vermont twice; once to Woodstock and once to the Von Trapp Lodge in Stowe.
The best part of Thanksgiving dinner is the leftovers. Since we have some, that's what's for dinner tonight. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone out there, in Japan or not.
